Patterns and Tones Turns 3!

On February 9, 2013 I started this photo blog and haven't looked back since. It has grown into a weekly exercise of visually describing the world by capturing it photographically and presenting my vision to you.

As I plan out every month, I start to ruminate on how I want to approach each subject and sometimes reexamine long term projects with new eyes. It has been a way for me to catalogue my work, a large majority which was shot on film, as well as an impetus to begin new projects. As I have in the previous two years, today I am thrilled to present a top 10 list of blog posts from 2015 based on readership.

Your favorite Pattens (Fine Art Photography) varied from the creation of a paper Queen, several very powerful images from The Mask Series, to a woven Author and Englishmen captured in the city market.

You couldn't get enought of the top 5 Tones (rock and roll photography) which ranged from vintage Garage and Budget Rock to the sweet sounds of Space and Psych!

This year I look forward to presenting another round of Authors in August, some rare shots from the archives, as well as introducing a printed version of Patterns and Tones in the form of magazine! Issue #1 is expected to be hot off the presses in late Spring.

Please email me if you would like to subscribe to my blog and receive weekly updates. And thank you for continuing to visit my corner of the world.

PATTERNS

#5

Capturing the Queen of the Quinns

Last year I crafted a costume out of paper for art patron and woman extraordinaire, Joan Quinn. This entry saw a lot of traffic as well as it's accompanying blog about the process in building the costume itself in "Constructing the Queen of the Quinns".

The results of this photographic drawing was a large 60x60" print that equaled the personality of its subject. I was both honored to work with this vivacious woman and excited to present to her a portrait from my perspective.

#4

Here Kitty, Kitty from The Mask Series

Visitors continue to check out "Here Kitty, Kitty" from the Mask Series and with good reason! This poolside feline is meow and the compositions are some of my finest.

They are also some of the earliest shots I did for this series and on a personal level, they capture beloved memories of spending time with this kitten and her kindle down in Laguna Beach.

#3

The Dutchman from The Mask Series

The great performance artist Tommy! was the subject matter for this entry and as one of his characters - The Dutchman, he did not disappoint.

This blog has seen a steady stream of visitors since it was first posted; a testament and memoriam to this amazing artist. We continue to champion this creative genius and hope that someday others may be able to experience his vision.

#2

Karen Finlay - Authors in August

Coming in at the #2 is none other than the wonderfully exuberant and incredibly talented author - Karen Finlay. As part of my Authors in August series, Karen graciously shared with us an excerpt from her essay "Strange Girl, Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Got the Beat".

My woven photographs helped to unify the series and was a vehicle for me to experiment as well as play with portraits of some of the finest authors I know.

#1

Norwich Market Portraits

And the #1 blog that saw more hits in the Patterns department is Norwich Market Portraits, a series I began in the English city of Norwich.

These fine and sturdy Englishmen posed for me and my trusty old Rolliflex as I began to capture them in the cities central market place. The timelessness of these portraits I believe draw people in on a daily basis.

TONES

#5

A Band Named broom

Coming in at #5 in the Tones department is a band named broom. The kids keep coming back to check out this entry and stop by to take a look at some rare shots of this mystical band.

#4

Wig Torture!

Another San Franscisco treat back in the 90's were Wig Torture! This blog entry has been a favorite and one that I will expand upon in the coming year to include an interview with the founding father of this band, Mr. Johnny Bartlett!

#3

It's The Mummies!!!

Although posted on All Hallows Eve, this blog has reach the top 3 of the most visited entries of 2015. IT'S THE MUMMIES!!! has daily visitors from around the world checking out this blog on the Kings of Budget Rock.

It was a thrill to capture their spectacular performance at the famous Pickwick Gardens and to have a moment back stage with one of my favorite garage bands of all time.

#2

Taking a Trip with The Space Lady

Taking a trip back in time and coming up at #2 is a blog piece I did on a San Francisco staple - Susie Space. Taking a trip with the Space Lady was defiantly a wonderful stroll down memory lane.

Beloved by all that come in contact with her otherworldly renditions of music staples, the large volume of traffic visiting this blog entry is astounding and is a testament to her ethereal presence.

This was the first woven portrait I posted last year. It updated a portrait I took of Susie Space back in 1990 on the streets of my home town.

#1

The Warlocks: Sweet Sounds of Psych

And coming in at #1 blog post on Tones from 2015 is The Warlocks: Sweet Sounds of Psych.
This blog showcased images I shot for Bomp! Records back in 2001.

Rare shots coupled with the amazing following this band cultivates makes this blog entry the most visited entry.
