Boys With Sticks

"Jake Croquet No. 1" from Boys With Sticks

Yes, the double entendre is inevitable but this series is about exploring what happens when you take these implements from the world of sports outside of the playing field, examine the symbology they carry with them and expand upon the tension they create when placed out of context.

The croquet mallet for instance is rarely used with force and is often associated with the aristocracy. Turning that on it's head, seen here in the hands of a leather clad rocker, it takes on a whole new meaning.

Richie Cricket embodies the UK's love of the sport but to an American, the odd bat and unfamiliar stances taken to hit the ball - coupled with a background off the field, creates a tension I really like. Taking portraits of people and placing them slightly out of context has been an underlying theme throughout my work and creates a slightly off kilter dynamic between my subjects and their surroundings.

I began this series quite awhile ago and have recently continued to explore and capture new images to further expand on this idea. From a pool cue to a hockey stick, I will present to additional Boys With Sticks in the months to come.
