THE VULCANEERS!

"Do the Vulcan - The Vulcaneers No. 1" 2017 As I began to go through my archives from 1995, I came across a show I shot at the Purple Onion with The Vulcaneers along with Tokyo sensations The Titans . I remember it being a typically crazy night and most shots on the roll contain beer being chucked around the room in front of my lens. Luckily I captured a couple of shots of the bands without the swill! I contacted Lars recently and he graciously gave us the low down on the history and line up of the band. I'm happy to share with you today some posterized versions I created for this blog. If there was one thing this band shared with the rest of the goof rock brigade, it's that they knew how to have a good time. Do the Vulcan! It's The Mummies!!!

Last weekend I had the great pleasure of seeing The Mummies perform at Pickwick Gardens in lovely Burbank, California. The last time I saw them play was back in 1990 at The 6th Street Garbage Dump and it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to seeing their  mad monster party  and the ensuing mayhem once again! The Kings of Budget Rock were well received by hundreds of Ghouls and Guys waiting to see these masters of goof rock perform. Along with The Jinxes , OBS (Our Band Sucks) , Thee Cormans , and Satan's Cheerleaders , The Mummies did not disappoint! Show promoter  Real Boss Hoss made sure to book a venue big enough to hold in all the madness. Pickwick Gardens and its vacuous banquet halls made it feel like we were all at a prom! It was a great reunion of rock n' rollers from all spectrums of the scene. I'm please to present to you some rare shots of these mummified misfits backstage, a selection of Prom pix, as well as a video I sh...

Nardwuar: The Human Serviette

Interviewing Nardwuar, the amazing music journalist from Vancouver, British Columbia, who has interviewed everyone from James Brown, Jay Z and Joan Jett to Cory Feldman, Crispin Glover and Cynthia Plaster Caster was a bit intimidating but since I've know this fun loving, sweet hearted man for over the last 18 years, I thought I would give it a go.  I was visiting some friends in Seattle last month. While having dinner in Capitol Hill at  Lost Lake , they casually asked me what I wanted to do that night. I of course asked what bands were playing in town. My friend Kerry pulled out her iPhone and began to list bands, when she suddenly mentioned The Evaporators who happened to be playing that night right around the corner at The Comet Tavern . I stopped her from listing any other bands. That was it. Nardwuar was in town and I happened to be a block away! We finished our hearty meals, headed out into the kind of rain I hadn't seen since I moved down to LA and headed ...

Russell Quan: A San Francisco Treat

While living in San Francisco from 1987 - 1999, I had the great opportunity to photograph many, many bands in my studio as well as performing live throughout the Bay Area. I had a small but lovely studio right between the two female statues on the outside facade of the Warfield Building . I shared it with my friend, Michelle Wilson .  I shot there from 1995 until late 98. Me and Russell  Being a singer myself, my love for music spilled over into my photography and the two have been intertwined ever since. In 1985 I started hanging out in San Francisco. Karen Finley (the writer not the performance artist!) took me to my first gig: The Pandoras and Voice of America at The Mabuhay Gardens on Broadway. Seeing those bands play at The Mab changed the course of my life forever.  I was introduced to Russell Quan sometime back in 1988 through our mutual friend Christof Certik, himself a very talented musician. It was Russell's sweet and kind demeanor whic...
