A gesture of gratitude Grier Cooper and I have always serendipitously greeted each other with a hand gesture that is at the same time an exclamation point and a mirror. This gesture has been persistent in our 30+ years of friendship and means a great deal to the both of us. When I asked her to assist me for an opening I was having in New Mexico, I could hear the hand going up over the phone, "of course" was the answer. After flying in Thursday night, we decided to check out the Petroglyph National Monument the following morning. The national monument, which stretches 17 miles along Albuquerque's West Mesa, is a volcanic basalt escarpment that dominates the city's western horizon and is the largest petroglyph site in North America. Seeing the rock carvings of varying symbols drawn across the landscape 400 to 700 years ago was humbling.   I'm delighted to announce that I will be part of a three person exhibition in Albuquerque, New Mexico at The Richard Levy Galler y February 25 - April 4. Along with artists Kim Largey  and Carl Smith , I will be exhibiting the following 6 gouache and flashe collages and 1 gouache painting.  If you are in town, I will be attending the opening on Friday, March 6th from 6-8pm.  It would be delightful to see you in person!  I will also be participating this year in several collaborative projects created by Kristine Schomaker from Shoebox Arts at The Startup Art Fair LA in Venice, CA. February 27th - March 1st. Over a hundred artists will be taking over the hotel and each room will have its own flavor.   Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, 2025 has been a challenging yet incredibly transformative year.  The extreme events of this year happened at a breakneck speed. Right out of the gate, the Eaton Fire tore through our town of Altadena on January 7th, laying waste to over 9,000 structures. Our community was devastated and the impact of this event has reverberated throughout the year. "Outer Inner Space No. 2" 2025    I was in a daze for several months trying to piece our life back together and did very little work in my studio. It wasn't until a friend of mine was talking about writing a play about women in science did I feel the urge to get back to thinking about art. I began slowly with 4 works in gouache which literally reignited my passion to create something after the fires.   I'm thrilled to be included in two group exhibitions here in Los Angeles, both of which will be opening next weekend and both of which include work I've done in the past but which have never been exhibited before. Earlier this year,  I decided to pull out photographs and paintings that still resonated with me.   "A Colorful Conversation" 2025 16x20" Gouache and flashe collage mounted on wood panel © Julie Green Since the Eaton fires in January, I have pivoted towards bold colored collages on paper. I had a choice between dwelling on what had just turned my world upside down in a negative way, or choose to focus on creating a world that could uplift myself and others during this very difficult year. It started as an exercise for another body of work that will be an investigation on resonance, coherence and the correlation between color and sound. I have had a deep relationship between both of these sensory mediums my entire life and cannot wait to allow viewers to "play the art" once they are completed next year!   Julie Green at Keystone July 5, 2025 It was a delightful summer afternoon at Keystone Gallery to have an artist talk and closing reception for my solo exhibition "Patterns and Tones for A Paper Ballet". It was a lively crowd that gathered the day after the 4th of July to listen to me talk about the process and evolution of the three bodies of work in the exhibition. It was a pleasure to see so many friends, colleagues and art professionals in attendance.  If you were unable to attend the closing, here is a link to the talk to get a better understanding of the work.
